  • It shouldn’t but there are medical reasons why it may like nerve damage……

    It can take a while to “break in”a new device a bit like buy a new pair of shoes. If you walk too far in new shoes you can get blisters.

    At TLCU we don’t like our clients wearing painful devices so if there is any issue call us!

  • It can take a while to adjust to a new device and there will be some fine tuning required.

    It’s important to talk openly with you clinician about any problems you may have. Its their job to work with you to help achieve the best out come.

  • There are many different ways that you device will be attached to you.

    These days the most common is a silicone type liner and pin lock system. TLCU will discuss the options with you. We want you to have the most comfortable and practical solution to suit your life style.

  • This depends on you. Some people wear there device from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed. Others for a few hours a day. There are many reasons why the time you can wear your prosthesis many be not as long as you like.

    Talk to your clinician about any difficulties you have with your device. They will develop a plan to help increase you mobility. This could include sessions with TLCU’s Physio.

  • Yes. Children are very adaptable and learn fast. It’s important for parents and carers to discuss with TLCU clinicians any difficulties children may have. We love finding solutions.

  • Hygiene is very important with your device. It needs to be cleaned daily.

    Your clinician will explain the best way.

    Socks and liners are worn next to the skin so a clean one worn at least everyday.

    In hot environments and high activity you many need to change or clean more than once a day.

    Discuss this with your clinician.

  • We want it to – but there could be reason why it doesn’t.

    It could be due to the components select for the design of your device.

    A knee joint with a higher mobility classification maybe bulkier and harder to cover cosmetically. Sometimes there is a need to determine a compromise between function and cosmesis.

    Please discuss your expectations with your clinician.

  • If you device seems too big or too small you need to have it adjusted.

    Please call TLCU for an appointment.

    If your device isn’t fitting properly it may cause a rub or skin break down get it sorted quickly so it doesn’t get worse.

  • Most devices are not water proof and if you do get your device wet please get TLCU staff to inspect it.

    If you are into water sports (fishing, swimming, boating), work in a wet environment or want to shower standing up on a device please discuss your needs with TLCU staff. There are special “wet devices” but often they are simple and their function may be compromised.

  • Yes – but you may need a special sports device.

    Please discuss your sports needs with TLCU clinicians who will work with you and design your special device…
